2020 LPGA Tour Coronavirus Outbreak

Last updated on July 10, 2021

In 2020 the LPGA Tour will feature 33 official events across 11 countries. The 2020 LPGA Tour season will include a new event in Florida at the Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, making that four tourneys for our Sunshine State.

In 2020 the LPGA Tour was supposed to see the return of the Blue Bay LPGA. A tournament in the People’s Republic of China to be held March 5-8 as part of the LPGA Tour’s Spring Asia Swing, followed by stops in Thailand and Singapore.

In late 2019 LPGA officials knew the COVID-19 outbreak would impact the 2020 season of events, unlike others and even our government. Thankfully LPGA officials got ahead of the problem canceling three contests due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

The next event, the Founders Cup, is set to be played as scheduled at Wildfire Golf Club in Phoenix from March 19-22. For now, the LPGA major slated for April 2-5 at Mission Hills Country Club. It is still good to go -but in the uncertain world of coronavirus. That can change swiftly.

Everything I’ve read tells me we must take care. The virus can spread from one person to another. For the most part, through droplets of saliva caused by sneezing carried in the air for up to six feet. These particles land on surfaces we touch. Then transfer when hugging, kissing, shaking hands, or sharing food or drink with someone who has the virus. Stay away from coughers or sneezers.

Nevertheless, state and town officials are worried. LA County officials are discussing the likelihood of banning onlookers, to slow the spread of the coronavirus, from attending sporting events in Southern California.

However, with the correct precautions attending an LPGA event. Shouldn’t be too big of a risk. The real risk won’t be the event itself. Likely the real threat will come from the pre-party events, meet and greets, hotels, and restaurants. Likewise, take extra care when taking public transportation, shuttles, and after-parties.

There’s a fair amount of Asian golf fans who come out and support the LPGA. Percentage-wise, the USA LPGA events have a disproportionate number of Asian fans. Understandable if you consider that the LPGA rooster consists of 51 Korean, 10 Chinees, 15 Japanese, 2 Malaysia, 4 Philippine, 17 Thailand, 10 Chinese Taipei, and many other Asian LPGA pros that call other countries home.
