Suspending the Mehlenbacher Project

Last updated on July 14, 2023

Mehlenbacher Road Project ID#001976A suspended

Was suspending the project in the best interest of the general public, as stated in the Joint Project Agreement (JPA) with the Town of Belleair. If not, why was Mehlenbacher Road Project ID#001976A suspended?

Pinellas County created a file in 2017 for Mehlenbacher Project ID# 001976A—a capital improvements project fully funded by Pinellas County Penny, with no Belleair involvement.

In 2018 a town meeting was held for Project 001976A. Belleair had approved Kimley-Horns drawings, and Belleair/Murphy agreed that Project 001976A should move forward.

Former TM Murphy emailed in August 2019 saying, “Pinellas County Public Works is making sidewalk and drainage improvements on Mehlenbacher Road.” start soon.

In September 2019, Mr. Washburn from Pinellas Public Works verified Mr. Murphy’s statement that the project would begin soon.

In October 2019, Mr. Washburn Pinellas Public Works engineer followed up and advised project was expected to begin construction in June 2020.

It was postponed once again. Its new starting date was February 2021, and its scheduled completion was November 2021.

In March of 2021, Mehlenbacher Project ID# 001976A, sanctioned by the state, funded and authorized by Pinellas, and approved by Belleair, got underway. Mr. Carpenter, who was so helpful and upfront, said likely be completed in 12 months.

At the same time, right down the street, Pinellas County’s Joint Project Agreement, ID 20-596A, with Belleair Bluffs, got underway.

Thinking the Belleair Bluffs Project ID 20-596A was Project ID# 001976A. It wasn’t till many months later, with no notice from Belleair without a public statement from the county. I learned Mehlenbacher Project ID# 001976A got suspended.
